About

Paulo Freire, born in Recife, is a major figure in critical pedagogy. After studying law, he turned to teaching and earned a doctorate in philosophy and education. Director of the national literacy program in 1963, he was imprisoned after the 1964 coup and then exiled for 16 years. His most famous work, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, critiques the banking model of education and proposes a dialogical education. He applied his methods in several African countries and served as Secretary of Education in São Paulo. His influence is worldwide.
