Paul Fort, full name Jules-Jean-Paul Fort, was a French poet and playwright. He studied at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris, where he joined Symbolist circles. In 1890, at age 18, he founded the Théâtre d'Art, staging plays by Maeterlinck and Verlaine with sets by Nabis painters. His major work is the cycle Ballades françaises (1897-1960), comprising 32 volumes written in his 'prose polyphonique'. He co-founded the review Vers et Prose (1905-1914) with Apollinaire. Elected Prince des Poètes in 1912, he hosted literary Tuesdays at La Closerie des Lilas. He received the Prix Lasserre (1936) and the Grand Prix de Littérature from the Académie française (1956).
