Patti Smith, born December 30, 1946, in Chicago, is a major figure of the New York City punk rock movement of the 1970s. Her debut album, Horses (1975), produced by John Cale, is considered a classic. She co-wrote the hit 'Because the Night' with Bruce Springsteen. Her memoir Just Kids (2010), about her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, won the National Book Award. Smith has also published several poetry collections and other memoirs, including M Train (2015) and Year of the Monkey (2019). She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 and has received numerous honors, including the Polar Music Prize and the Legion of Honour.
