About
Omar Sharif, born Michel Demitri Shalhoub in Alexandria, was an Egyptian actor who became an international star. Graduating in mathematics and physics from Cairo University, he began in Egyptian cinema before breaking through in David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia (1962), earning an Oscar nomination and two Golden Globes. He won a third Golden Globe for Doctor Zhivago (1965). He also starred in Funny Girl (1968) and received the César Award for Best Actor for Monsieur Ibrahim (2003). An accomplished bridge player, he published columns and books on the game. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, he died in 2015 in Cairo.
