About
Nicolae Iorga (1871-1940) was a Romanian historian and politician. Appointed professor of universal history at the University of Bucharest in 1895, he was elected to the Romanian Academy in 1897. Founder of the Democratic Nationalist Party (1910) and the newspaper Neamul românesc (1906), he served as Prime Minister and Minister of Education from 1931 to 1932. A prolific author, he published over 1,000 books and thousands of articles, including major works on the history of the Romanians and the Ottoman Empire. He also founded a people's university at Vălenii de Munte (1908) and the Southeast European Institute (1913). He was assassinated by the Iron Guard in 1940.
