Newt Gingrich, born June 17, 1943, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is an American politician. He taught history and geography before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978. He was the chief architect of the 'Contract with America' in 1994, which helped Republicans gain control of the House. He served as Speaker from 1995 to 1999. He resigned after the 1998 elections. He is the author of numerous books, including alternative history novels.
