Muriel Barbery, born May 28, 1969, in Casablanca, is a French novelist. A former philosophy teacher, she taught at the University of Burgundy and the IUFM of Saint-Lô before dedicating herself to writing. Her first novel, Une gourmandise (2000), won awards. Her second novel, The Elegance of the Hedgehog (2006), became an international bestseller, translated into over thirty languages and adapted into a film in 2009. She also published The Life of Elves (2015), A Strange Country (2019), A Single Rose (2020), and One Hour of Fervor (2022), a finalist for the Prix Goncourt. Her stay in Japan in 2008 deeply influenced her work.
