About

Moshe Sharett (1894-1965) was an Israeli statesman, born in the Russian Empire and emigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1906. A graduate of the Herzliya Hebrew High School, he studied law in Istanbul and served in the Ottoman army. From 1933 to 1948, he headed the Political Department of the Jewish Agency, becoming the chief diplomat of the Yishuv. A signatory of Israel's Declaration of Independence, he served as Foreign Minister from 1948 to 1956, establishing the diplomatic service and negotiating the reparations agreement with Germany. Prime Minister from 1954 to 1955, he favored a moderate approach to Arab tensions. Forced to resign in 1956, he later chaired the World Zionist Organization.
