Steven Patrick Morrissey, born 22 May 1959 in Davyhulme (now Greater Manchester), is a British singer, songwriter, and author. He rose to fame as the frontman and lyricist of the Smiths (1982–1987), one of the most influential British alternative rock bands of the 1980s. After the band's breakup, he pursued a successful solo career, marked by albums such as Viva Hate (1988), Your Arsenal (1992), and You Are the Quarry (2004). Known for his distinctive baritone voice and sardonic, introspective lyrics, he is also a lifelong animal rights advocate. He published his Autobiography in 2013 and a debut novel, List of the Lost, in 2015.
