About
Monique Wittig (1935-2003) was a French author and feminist theorist. Her first novel, L'Opoponax (1964), won the Prix Médicis. She co-founded the Mouvement de libération des femmes in 1970 and was part of the Gouines rouges. Her works, such as Les Guérillères (1969) and The Lesbian Body (1973), explore themes of gender and heteronormativity. Moving to the United States in 1976, she taught at the University of Arizona. Her essay collection The Straight Mind (1992) is foundational to queer theory.
