About
Mike Nichols, born Mikhail Igor Peschkowsky in Berlin, fled Nazi Germany in 1939 and became a U.S. citizen in 1944. After studying at the University of Chicago and training at the Actors Studio, he formed the comedy duo Nichols and May with Elaine May, winning a Grammy in 1961. He made his Broadway directorial debut in 1963 with Barefoot in the Park and won a total of nine Tony Awards. His first film, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), received 13 Oscar nominations, and his second, The Graduate (1967), won him the Academy Award for Best Director. He also won four Emmy Awards and achieved EGOT status. He died in New York City in 2014.
