About
Maximilian Schell, born in Vienna and died in Innsbruck, was a Swiss-Austrian actor and director. Fleeing Nazism with his family in 1938, he grew up in Basel. He studied literature and art history before starting in theater in 1952. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). He was also nominated for The Man in the Glass Booth (1975) and Julia (1977). As a director, he made The Pedestrian (1973) and the documentary Marlene (1984). He was the brother of actress Maria Schell.
