Marie d'Agoult, born Marie Catherine Sophie de Flavigny in Frankfurt in 1805, was a French writer known under the pen name Daniel Stern. After leaving her husband for composer Franz Liszt, she pursued a literary career in Paris. Her novel Nélida (1846) and her History of the Revolution of 1848 (1850-1853) earned her recognition. A republican and feminist figure, she hosted an influential salon and advocated for democracy and women's emancipation.
