About
María Elena Walsh (1930-2011) was a major figure in Argentine literature and music. She published her first poetry collection, Otoño imperdonable, at age 17, praised by Juan Ramón Jiménez. In the 1950s, she formed the folk duo Leda & María in Paris. Her children's books, such as Tutú Marambá and El Reino del Revés, became classics. Her songs, including Manuelita la tortuga and Como la cigarra, are famous throughout the Spanish-speaking world. During the military dictatorship, her song Oración a la justicia became an anthem for civil rights. She received numerous awards, including the Konex de Brillante in 1994.
