About

Marcel Pagnol, born in Aubagne in 1895, was a French writer, playwright and filmmaker. After studying in Montpellier, he taught English before dedicating himself to writing. He achieved success in theater with Topaze (1928) and the Marseille trilogy (Marius, Fanny, César). In 1933, he founded his own film studio in Marseille and directed numerous films, often adapted from Jean Giono. Elected to the Académie française in 1946, he was the first filmmaker to enter it. His childhood memoirs, La Gloire de mon père and Le Château de ma mère, are classics. He died in Paris in 1974.
