About

Marcel Arland (1899-1986) was a French writer and critic, a major figure of the Nouvelle Revue Française. Co-founder of the Dadaist journal Aventure in 1920, he joined the NRF in the early 1920s, becoming co-director with Jean Paulhan in 1953, then sole editor-in-chief from 1968 to 1977. He won the Prix Goncourt in 1929 for his novel L'Ordre. Elected to the Académie française in 1968, he was also an art critic, writing on Kandinsky, Chagall, and Rouault. His work includes about forty books, including Terres étrangères, La Grâce, and Le Grand Pardon.
