About
Madeleine de Scudéry (1607-1701) was a French novelist, poet, and salonnière. The younger sister of writer Georges de Scudéry, she published most of her works under her brother's name, a common practice for women writers of the time. She authored Artamène ou le Grand Cyrus (1649-1653), one of the longest novels ever written, and Clélie, histoire romaine (1654-1660), which contains the famous Carte de Tendre, a topographical allegory of love. Her literary salon, the Société du samedi, was renowned. She was the first winner of the eloquence prize from the Académie française in 1671.
