About
Louis I of Bavaria (1786-1868) reigned from 1825 to 1848. Son of Maximilian I, he was a German nationalist crown prince and played a role in the liberal constitution of 1818. His reign transformed Munich into a European cultural center, with neoclassical monuments like the Glyptothek and the Pinakothek. After 1830, he became more conservative, promoting a Catholic revival. His affair with Lola Montez led to his abdication in 1848. He is also known for commissioning Walhalla and the Bavaria statue.
