About

Louis Gabriel Ambroise, vicomte de Bonald (1754-1840), was a French philosopher and politician, a leading figure of the traditionalist and counter-revolutionary school. Emigrating in 1791, he wrote his major work, Théorie du pouvoir politique et religieux (1796), in exile. He was elected to the Académie française in 1816 and served as a deputy from 1815 to 1822. His thought, based on the divine origin of language and a triadic conception of society, influenced French legitimism.
