About
Lou Andreas-Salomé, born Louise von Salomé in St. Petersburg, was a German-Russian intellectual and writer. After studying in Zurich, she associated with Nietzsche and Rée, declining their marriage proposals. She married Friedrich Carl Andreas in 1887. Close to Rilke, she influenced him and traveled with him to Russia. In 1911, she met Freud and became a psychoanalyst in Göttingen. She wrote essays, novels, and studies, including the first monograph on Nietzsche.
