Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773), was a British statesman and diplomat. He served as ambassador to The Hague, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and Secretary of State. He is best known for his Letters to His Son, published posthumously in 1774, offering advice on manners and worldly conduct. He was instrumental in the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in Britain in 1752.
