About
Liviu Rebreanu was a major Romanian writer, regarded as the creator of the modern Romanian novel. Born in Transylvania, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he experienced rural life and ethnic tensions, recurring themes in his work. His novel 'Ion' (1920) marked a turning point in Romanian literature with its psychological and social realism. 'Pădurea spânzuraților' (1922), inspired by his brother's tragic fate, explores moral dilemmas in wartime. Rebreanu also served as director of the National Theatre of Bucharest and president of the Romanian Writers' Society. Elected to the Romanian Academy in 1939, he died in 1944, leaving an influential body of work.
