About
Laurence Sterne was born in Clonmel, Ireland, in 1713. After studying at Cambridge, he became a clergyman in Yorkshire. His novel 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman' (1759-1767), published in nine volumes, made him famous for its eccentric humor and non-linear narrative, anticipating the stream of consciousness. He later published 'The Sermons of Mr. Yorick' and, shortly before his death, 'A Sentimental Journey' (1768). His innovative work profoundly influenced modern literature.
