Kathy Reichs, born Kathleen Joan Toelle in 1948 in Chicago, is an American forensic anthropologist and novelist. She earned degrees from American University and Northwestern University and is certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology. She taught at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and consulted for medical examiner offices in North Carolina and Quebec. Her debut novel, Déjà Dead (1997), launched the series featuring Temperance Brennan, adapted into the television series Bones. She also assisted in victim identification after the 9/11 attacks and at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
