About

Julius Nyerere, born on 13 April 1922 in Butiama, was a teacher turned politician. He became the first Prime Minister of independent Tanganyika (1961) and the first President of Tanzania after the union with Zanzibar (1964). Nicknamed 'Mwalimu' (teacher in Swahili), he promoted Ujamaa, an African socialist philosophy focused on self-reliance and education. He voluntarily stepped down from power in 1985, a first for an African head of state. He also supported liberation movements and mediated regional conflicts. He died on 14 October 1999 in London.
