Juliette Adam (1836-1936) was a major figure in French literary and political life. Founder and director of La Nouvelle Revue (1879-1899), she hosted an influential republican salon. An early feminist, she published an essay against Proudhon in 1858. As a novelist, she achieved success with Païenne (1883). A fervent patriot, she campaigned for revenge against Germany and attended the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. She left seven volumes of memoirs.
