Julie Andrews, born Julia Elizabeth Wells on 1 October 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, England, is a British actress, singer and author. She began performing on stage at age 12 and became known on Broadway in the 1950s. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her film debut in Mary Poppins (1964) and was nominated for The Sound of Music (1965) and Victor/Victoria (1982). After throat surgery in 1997, she shifted to speaking roles and voice acting. She was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2000. She has also written memoirs and children's books.
