Julian Barnes is an English writer born in Leicester in 1946. After studying at Oxford, he worked as a lexicographer and then as a literary critic. His first novel, Metroland (1980), won the Somerset Maugham Award. He gained prominence with Flaubert's Parrot (1984), acclaimed by critics. In 2011, he received the Booker Prize for The Sense of an Ending. His work explores memory, history, and human relationships. He has also written crime novels under a pseudonym and memoirs. He has received numerous honors, including the Princess of Asturias Award in 2026.
