About

Joseph Joubert was a French moralist and essayist born in Montignac in 1754. He studied in Toulouse and moved to Paris in 1778, where he associated with Diderot, d'Alembert, and Chateaubriand. He published nothing during his lifetime but left about 20,000 pages of thoughts and fragments. Elected justice of the peace in 1790, he was appointed inspector-general of the Imperial University in 1809. His writings were published posthumously from 1838.
