About
José Raúl Capablanca, born in Havana, was a chess prodigy, learning to play at age four and defeating the Cuban champion at twelve. He briefly studied at Columbia University before dedicating himself to chess. Third official World Chess Champion (1921-1927), he dethroned Emanuel Lasker and lost his title to Alexander Alekhine. Famous for his clear style and endgame technique, he remained undefeated in tournament play from 1916 to 1924. Author of 'Chess Fundamentals', he is considered one of the greatest players of all time.
