About
José-Maria de Heredia was a French poet born in Cuba in 1842. He arrived in France at age nine, studied at Senlis and then at the École des chartes. He became a leading figure of the Parnassian movement, alongside Leconte de Lisle. His only collection, Les Trophées (1893), gathers sonnets of great formal perfection, evoking historical and artistic scenes. Naturalized French in 1893, he was elected to the Académie française in 1894. He also translated the History of the Conquest of New Spain and became administrator of the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in 1901. He died in 1905.
