John V. Hinds (1943-1994) was an American linguist and pioneer in Japanese discourse analysis. He was a professor at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and edited the Journal of Japanese Linguistics from 1986 to 1990. His work introduced the use of actual conversational data to study Japanese grammar. He is known for his 'writer-responsible' vs. 'reader-responsible' language typology (1987), influential in comparative rhetoric and ESL writing studies. He also conducted research on Korean and Thai.
