John Stephen Goodman, born June 20, 1952 in Affton, Missouri, is an American actor. He attended Southwest Missouri State University on a football scholarship, but an injury ended his football career, leading him to switch to drama and graduate in 1975. He rose to fame with his role as Dan Conner on the sitcom Roseanne (1988–1997; revived in 2018), earning seven Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe Award in 1993. He won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2007 for his guest appearance on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. He is a frequent collaborator with the Coen brothers, appearing in films such as Raising Arizona (1987), Barton Fink (1991), The Big Lebowski (1998), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), and Inside Llewyn Davis (2013).
