About

John Cassavetes, born December 9, 1929, in New York to Greek immigrant parents, is considered a pioneer of American independent cinema. After studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, he gained recognition as an actor, notably in Edge of the City (1957) and The Dirty Dozen (1967), which earned him an Oscar nomination. His first film, Shadows (1959), shot on 16mm and partly improvised, won the Critics Award at Venice. He went on to direct personal works such as Faces (1968), A Woman Under the Influence (1974), and Gloria (1980), often starring his wife Gena Rowlands. His naturalistic style and collaborative approach left a lasting impact on American cinema. He died on February 3, 1989, in Los Angeles.
