Jimmy Carter, born in Plains, Georgia, served in the U.S. Navy before entering politics. As governor of Georgia, he was elected president in 1976. His term saw the Camp David Accords, normalization of relations with China, and creation of the Departments of Energy and Education. After his presidency, he founded the Carter Center with his wife Rosalynn, dedicated to conflict resolution and public health.
