Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, born Marie-Barbe Leprince in Rouen in 1711, was a French novelist and educator. She is best known for her version of 'Beauty and the Beast', published in her collection 'Le Magasin des enfants' (1756). After leaving France around 1748 to work as a governess in London, she produced most of her major works there, including instructional dialogues between a governess and her pupils. She published about seventy volumes, including 'Le Magasin des adolescentes' (1760) and 'Le Mentor moderne' (1773), and advocated for women's education. She died in 1780 in Chavanod.
