About

Jeanne d'Albret, born in 1528 at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, was the daughter of Henry II of Navarre and Marguerite of Angoulême, sister of Francis I. Becoming Queen of Navarre in 1555, she publicly converted to Calvinism in 1560 and became a leader of the Huguenot movement. She imposed Protestantism in her domains, participated in the Wars of Religion, and negotiated the Peace of Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1570. Mother of the future Henry IV, she died in Paris in 1572, shortly before her son's wedding.
