Jean-Marc Aveline, born December 26, 1958 in Sidi Bel Abbès (Algeria), is a French cardinal. From a Pied-Noir family exiled to Marseille in 1965-1966, he was ordained priest in 1984. With a doctorate in theology and a degree in philosophy, he founded the Institute of Sciences and Theology of Religions in Marseille and directed the Catholic Institute of the Mediterranean. Appointed auxiliary bishop in 2013, he became Archbishop of Marseille in 2019. Created cardinal in 2022, he was elected president of the French Bishops' Conference in 2025. Committed to migrants and interreligious dialogue, he is a member of several Vatican dicasteries.
