About
Jean Hyppolite (1907-1968) was a French philosopher, known for his translation of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit (1939) and his commentaries. An agrégé in philosophy, he taught at Strasbourg and then at the Sorbonne, before directing the École Normale Supérieure (1954-1963). Elected to the Collège de France in 1963, he held the chair in the history of philosophical thought. His work, notably Logic and Existence (1952), influenced thinkers such as Deleuze, Derrida, and Foucault. He founded the Épiméthée collection at PUF.
