Jean-François Revel, born Jean-François Ricard in Marseille in 1924, was a French philosopher and journalist. A philosophy professor, he left academia to write. As editor of L'Express, he became known for his critical essays on totalitarianism and democracy. Elected to the Académie française in 1997, he authored numerous works, including 'Without Marx or Jesus' and 'The Totalitarian Temptation'.
