About

James V, born 10 April 1512 at Linlithgow Palace, was the son of James IV and Margaret Tudor. He became king at 17 months after his father's death at Flodden, spent his minority under regents, and assumed personal rule in 1528. He founded the College of Justice in 1532, received the title Defender of the Faith in 1537, and married Madeleine of Valois then Mary of Guise. A Renaissance patron, he built the royal palace at Stirling and the tennis court at Falkland. He died on 14 December 1542, leaving the throne to his daughter Mary, Queen of Scots.
