About

James I of Scotland was born in 1394 at Dunfermline, the second son of Robert III. In 1406, while en route to France, he was captured by the English and held prisoner for 18 years. He became king upon his father's death in 1406, but only ruled effectively from 1424, after his release and marriage to Joan Beaufort. Back in Scotland, he asserted his authority by executing several nobles, reformed justice and administration. He is also the author of the poem 'The Kingis Quair'. He was assassinated in 1437 in Perth.
