About
Jacques Rancière is a French philosopher born in 1940 in Algiers. A former student of the École Normale Supérieure, he initially collaborated with Louis Althusser before breaking with him after May 1968. Professor emeritus at Paris VIII University, he developed an original thought on intellectual emancipation, politics, and aesthetics. His work on 19th-century worker archives and his concepts of the 'distribution of the sensible' and 'dissensus' have marked contemporary philosophy.
