About

Jean Paul Getty, born in 1892 in Minneapolis, was an oil tycoon who made his fortune in the Oklahoma oil fields by 1916. In 1949, he secured a 60-year concession in the Neutral Zone between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, where oil was struck in 1953, making him the richest American alive according to Fortune in 1957. A passionate art collector, he founded the J. Paul Getty Museum in 1953 and opened the Getty Villa in 1974, modeled after the Villa of the Papyri. He moved to England in 1951 and died there in 1976, bequeathing most of his fortune to establish the J. Paul Getty Trust.
