J. K. Rowling, born Joanne Rowling on 31 July 1965 in Yate, England, is a British novelist. A graduate of the University of Exeter in French and Classics, she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series in 1990 during a train journey. The first volume was published in 1997, and the series, completed in 2007, achieved worldwide success with over 500 million copies sold. She also writes crime fiction under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, she was awarded the OBE in 2001 and the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2017. Engaged in philanthropy, she founded the Lumos fund to end the institutionalisation of children.
