Ivan Illich was an Austrian thinker born in Vienna in 1926. Ordained as a priest in 1951, he worked in New York and Puerto Rico before founding the Centro Intercultural de Documentación (CIDOC) in Mexico in 1961. He is known for his critique of the counterproductivity of modern institutions, such as schooling and medicine. His works, including 'Deschooling Society' (1971) and 'Tools for Conviviality' (1973), advocate decentralized and convivial alternatives. He taught at several universities and died in Bremen in 2002.
