About

Ismail Gasprinski (1851-1914) was a Crimean Tatar intellectual, educator, and publisher. After studies in Russia and Europe, he served as mayor of Bakhchisaray (1878-1884) and in 1883 founded the bilingual newspaper Tercümân, which became the most influential Pan-Turkic publication of its era. A pioneer of the Jadidist educational reform movement, he opened a model school in 1884 and advocated native-language instruction. He authored the political essay Russian Muslims (1881) and utopian novels. He also launched journals for women and children and co-founded the Union of Muslims in 1906. His motto 'Unity in language, thought, and action' shaped the Turkic cultural revival.
