About
Isabel Allende, born in 1942 in Lima, is a Chilean writer. Exiled to Venezuela after the 1973 coup, she wrote her first novel, The House of the Spirits (1982), which became an international bestseller. Her work, translated into more than 35 languages, blends magical realism with feminist themes. She received Chile's National Prize for Literature (2010) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2014). In 1996, she founded the Isabel Allende Foundation in honor of her daughter.
