About
Irish blessings form a corpus of traditional Celtic prayers and wishes, of anonymous authorship, transmitted orally for centuries. Arising from a lay spirituality where prayer was intertwined with daily life, these texts reflect a synthesis of early Irish monastic Christianity and pre-Christian Celtic culture, rural and nature-centered. The most famous example, 'May the road rise up to meet you,' is sometimes attributed to Saint Patrick, but its origin remains unknown. Handwritten copies and needlework of these blessings are preserved in university collections, attesting to their popularity in the 19th and 20th centuries.
