About

Ion Iliescu (1930-2025) was a Romanian politician and a central figure in the post-communist transition. Trained as an engineer, he joined the Communist Party in 1953 and held ministerial positions under Nicolae Ceaușescu before falling out of favor in 1971. He led the National Salvation Front during the 1989 revolution and served as President of Romania three times (1990-1992, 1992-1996, 2000-2004). His tenure saw the adoption of the 1991 constitution, NATO integration, and progress toward the EU. He was also criticized for his handling of the 1990 Mineriad, for which he was indicted for crimes against humanity.
